Tuesday, July 14 9:00 pm 15.9 mi
AT 1116.0 Stream and Tenting → AT 1131.9 Carlisle Days Inn
Weather: Hot and sunny, kind of cold overnight last night
Trail Conditions: One big climb and some rock scrambling – up, over, and through. Lots of flat farm walking after that, and 2 towns – Boiling Springs and Carlisle
My Condition: Knees were a little sore today. My body handled the ½ gallon of ice cream no problemo!
Two meals in towns today – cheese fries and a salsa verde burrito in Boiling Springs, and a waffle, spaghetti, and a piece of peanut butter pie from the diner in Carlisle. Mailed my Melanzana hoodie and base layer leggings home after I bought a new shirt in Boiling Springs at the outfitter. Also sent Sawyer Squeeze and CNOC bag home, as the Aquamira has been working great.
Post Trail Analysis
Pennsylvania gets a bad rep, much of it earned, but some of it unfairly. Today was a lovely day in my home state! Silky smooth trail, beautiful flat farmland expanses as far as the eye could see, and FOOD! Pennsylvania might be nothing but rocks and rattlesnakes to most people, but in my eyes it had the best eating on the trail. We ran in to Fix It and Tiger Lily at Boiling Springs outside the visitor’s center and again at the diner. We get a lot of funny looks from waiters and waitresses after hearing our huge, often hodge-podge and mismatched orders. We get a lot of funny looks when all that food miraculously disappears, stopping just short of licking the plates clean (we’re not animals, and COVID). Puddles made the switch from hiking in Chacos to wearing trail runners at the outfitter, a trend which would continue through the end of the trail. The Middlesex Diner by our hotel in Carlisle might’ve been my favorite restaurant of the entire trail. I looked like Will Ferrell in Elf with a plate of spaghetti and a waffle in front of me, but the body craves what the body craves. I put it all down, including the butter, syrup, and brown sugar, and additionally took some dessert to go.
