Wednesday, September 9 7:46 pm 14.1 mi
AT 1881.5 Mt. Hight → AT 1895.6 Centennial Trail Stealth Site
Weather: Hot and muggy, overcast
Trail Conditions: Deceptively tough day! Steep downhills with some technical terrain
My Condition: Can’t believe I’ll hit mile 1900 tomorrow, and Maine the next day!
We all woke up early this morning to watch the sunrise at Mt. Hight. Great view of the red sun rising over mist shrouded valleys with the Presidential range waking up behind us. Walked with Puddles for a bit this morning – she’d been hinting that something was going on back home, but today told me that her grandfather wasn’t expected to make it much longer. Not only is it hard to get news like that on the trail, you’re not always able to even get the news, period, which can’t be easy. She’s so tough, but my heart still aches knowing what she’s going through. I asked her about the good memories she has of him. It sounds like that grandmother will be moving in with them, which she looks forward to. Also hiked with Blue and talked how the trail has helped us, especially as two workaholic, full effort all the time kind of people, and what’s next after the trail. Stopped by Rattle River hostel to pick up our food we had left there a couple days back during our zero at Hummingbird’s, and the hostel was completely full so we hiked onwards to a nearby stealth site.
Post Trail Analysis
This was, by far, one of the prettiest sunrises I’d see anywhere on trail. We didn’t get to enjoy sunset the night previous with clouds right on top of us, but the sights were definitely worth waking up early for this morning. Odie had told us that Rattle River had some of the best wifi anywhere he had been on trail, so we all downloaded the audiobooks, podcasts, music, tv, and movies we were eager to get. We heard our very first unsolicited guitar music of the trail – I almost made it all the way from Georgia to Maine without hearing Wonderwall, but alas. We were hoping to spend the night here to ensure phone service for Puddles with everything going on back home, but unfortunately this was the one and only time we were unable to stay at a hostel due to it being completely full. Rather than pay to camp outside, we opted to wander a bit further to a stealth site listed in the Guthook comments.
