Tuesday, August 25 8:46 pm 17.8 mi
AT 1718.6 Chateauguay Rd → AT 1736.4 Thistle Hill Shelter
Weather: Warm humid morning, strong storm cell in early afternoon, chilly evening
Trail Conditions: Smooth trail surface most of the day, albeit with lots of short uphill/downhills. Beautiful overlooks near the end of the day
My Condition: Took almost half the day to hit my stride. Hopefully a zero in town will alleviate some of this general fatigue
Hikers met: Atlas, Ghost, Splinter
We may have been visited by a moose last night – large hoof prints, when it startled it sounded like a it was slipping and tripping over loose stones running into the woods. Fine Line was right by the road and started clapping to scare it off. Saw Hippie and his pup, and met Atlas and Ghost, at the Lookout. Got caught in a storm, with the thunder cracking seemingly right overhead. Was soaked to the bone and slipping and sliding all over the Vermud. Found trail magic by the river – a cache of Coke and Fanta! Puddles caught up with me at the beautiful view at mile 1732.8. Ate blackberries, talked more LOTR fanfic, Super Bowl commercials, peanut butter and jelly, and tried to think of “things that are universally liked” (Dolly Parton, grandmothers, puppies), “things that are universally disliked” (going to the DMV), “things that people feel universally lukewarm about” (‘My Achy Breaky Heart’ by Billy Ray Cyrus, Ruby Tuesdays). Blue’s roast was tonight, and although she hobbled into camp seemingly in a decent amount of pain (foot pain), she laughed and seemed more herself as we lovingly made fun of her.
Post Trail Analysis
This shelter had one of the most unique privies I saw all trail. It was a pentagon shaped, and had window-screens on all sides from standing-waist height and up.
Blue’s roast is written from the imaginary point of view of a seven and a half year old little brother. You already know about renting stuff from Walmart by now. When she talks on the phone to book our hotel rooms, she always adopts a sophisticated “fancy voice.” She also swears by “Blue Science” on a number of things. Tiger Balm not only helps sooth aching feet, it also deters bears, squirrels, mice, and other animals (something about the menthol). Taking 4 200mg Ibuprofin is never as good as taking an 800mg Ibuprofin. Stuff like that! There was also a mystery aboard her naval carrier about someone that pooped in one of the hallways which remains unsolved to this very day, although I'm about to shed some light on that situation...
Blue Sasquatch's Roast
Dear Diary,
My name is Leafy Greens. I am emotionally seven and a half. My hobbies are to hike and eat blocks of cheese and make fun of my sister Blue. It is so easy to make fun of her. She smells funny. She also picks her nose. Sometimes she eats it. Sometimes she paints with it. Sometimes she feeds it to the pet bird. It’s so funny! On car rides we always play the rollercoaster game and I squish her going around turns. One time when I was a baby, she got too excited during a roll tide game and she knocked me off the couch. I bumped my lil baby head on my talladega nights race car bed. She rubbed Tiger Balm all over my bald, bruised lil baby head and gave me an 800mg Ibuprofin. It was so funny! On camping trips I always take the best spot for my tent and she gets so mad. It’s funny! One time when I was in kindergarten she brought me birthday cupcakes in her backpack. They didn’t get squished at all! I ate a bunch and then farted and blamed it on her. Everyone thought she did it. So funny! She taught me everything I know. I learned that I could save up my allowance money and rent anything from Walmart. I just buy it, use it as much as I want, take it back, and get my allowance money back. I think someday I’ll rent a bathrobe from Walmart. Wouldn’t that be funny? She sometimes prank calls hotels and uses a fancy phone voice to trick them into giving her a room.
P.S. My sister is the phantom pooper.
