Weather: Cold overnight, cool AM, mild afternoon, cool PM, cold overnight
Trail Conditions: Pretty smooth sailing (for Maine). Even saw a rare (for Maine) switchback at one point today!
My Condition: Nasty ankle roll today – I’m surprised how often I twist and probably sprain or badly roll my ankles, and how effective walking it off is. Soon after, it’s like nothing even happened!
Short day, but we made our way into Rangely, shuttling in and hitching back out. Great bar food for lunch – buffalo tenders and fries really hit the spot, and two beers was plenty for me. Can’t beat those easy liquid calories! Replaced some tent stakes, picked up more maple candy, and resupplied at the IGA. Bounce, who was thru hiking this year but stopped and is actually now living in the town he stopped in, gave us a ride back to the trailhead. Hummingbird’s 80s playlist, “Papa Tom’s Time Machine,” gave us nonstop hit after hit to march along to – not a bad tune in the bunch from “Thriller” to “Bust a Move” to the “Final Countdown.”
Post Trail Analysis
Definitely a cool town, situated halfway between the equator and the north pole (3107 miles from each)! Hummingbird picked up a new Jetboil stove and Blue picked up a moose hat. The bar food, however, would be the highlight of the day. Clearly this restaurant understood hikers, because the nachos that Puddles and Hummingbird ordered were HUGE, and they were just an appetizer! This was one of the incredibly rare times that every single bite of food at the table was not devoured. I regretted only being in my t-shirt during the ride back to the trail in the back of Bounce’s truck.
